Story: Catherine is trying to make a living in the US till things go bad and she is brought to trial for the murder of a cop, she escapes the law only to be captured by a secret organization. She has a special microchip implanted in her brain and she is trained to become a special agent. All she knows is that she must do as she is told or she will not receive the medication that is essential for her survival. When her training is complete, she is sent on a mission to assassinate someone for unknown reasons.

Review: Black Cat is an action movie that is very similar to La Femme Nikita, in a sense of the context where a woman is trained to be a killer by a secret group. This movie has received many bad reviews because it kind of copies La Femme Nikita. The story line is basic but you are left with a lot of unanswered questions during the entire movie. You don't know why she is killing anyone or who this secret group is.

The story mostly revolves around Catherine but several key characters come into play during the movie. She starts off with little background but there is a great deal of character evolution that follows. From the moment she kills someone by accident, to her imprisonment to finally becoming a killer, she goes through a lot. The psychological aspect of the character could have been better developed and exploited. The secondary support characters were pretty ordinary and they were there mostly for support. We must mention the American characters, like in most older Chinese movies, the American are pretty stupid and dumb looking. That just made things extremely cheesy and ruined most of the movie because a good portion of the movie takes place in the US.

There was some action in the movie and it was pretty decent, from gun fights to covert operation. The action was maybe the only strong point in the movie as the rest of it was pretty ordinary. Some of the fight scenes were pretty nice but in general nothing really exciting. As for the covert ops, you have very few of them and they were very basic but even with the simplicity some were pretty interesting.

The subtitles were nice and clear on the DVD and the dialogs were simple. We heard this movie was really bad and a complete rip-off of La Femme Nikita, we decided to check out anyway. We were expecting something really bad but it turned out to be ok, the movie was somewhat cheesy and the story lacking originality but it was not flat out bad. This movie could have been a lot better as the story did have potential. The movie has a few sequels so we guess it did have some popularity in Hong Kong at the time of its release. We suggest you rent this movie before you buy it.

DVD [ NTSC, All Region ] :

(New Remastered version) The image (LTB) quality was decent for a new Megastar release, the sounds was a good surround 5.1. The extras on this DVD include: Chapter Selection, Cast and Info, Officla Trailer of the movie, 4 additional trailers (Back Cat 2, Moment of Romance, Jackie Chan; My Stunt, Media Asian Promo Trailer). If you enjoy this movie the new remastered DVD is a good choice.
