Story: Some amateur criminals fail in the robbery of a jewelry store and run off and a patrolling policeman spots them and chases after. One of the criminals hides in an apartment building and the police block off all exits and start to search. Meanwhile a deadly killer is in one of the apartments with two hostages. As the police search the building the killer starts to panic and he attacks the police. Members of the killers gang come and save him resulting in more death and bloodshed. The police are left with many questions and assign a special department to deal with the criminals.

Review: Expect the Unexpected is a police action drama, it is much like other police movies from Hong Kong. The movie is a mix of action and drama, in the sense that you have high action scenes but it is counter balanced by a lot of interpersonal drama as the story develops. The story is good, a smooth flow of events that are interesting to follow, you will also find it easy to follow this movie.

One of the best things about this movie is probably the cast, there is a certain chemistry between the characters. The small special department almost seems like a family and as the movie develops you get to learn a bit more about them. There is also a secondary character that adds the love story factor to the movie, it is sort of a side plot that better defines two of the main characters. Some of the villains get some spotlight during the movie, the killer gang is played well but the short time does not give a lot of insight into their characters.

Being a police movie you can expect quite a bit of action, 5 minutes into the movie things will start to heat up. The action scenes themselves get pretty intense, heavy exchanges of gunfire and people getting shot. These action scenes are followed by a more quiet periods in the movie were the story advances and you see the interpersonal relationship between the detectives. Overall there is a decent amount of action in the movie but some people might find the periods of drama between action scenes a little long.

The subtitles are clear and easy to read, you should have little trouble following the dialog. Expect the Unexpected is a pretty good movie, they don't do anything extra ordinary, everything is kept simple and enjoyable. Probably one of the strongest points in this movie are the characters since they are very likable, also the characters themselves take up a lot of the movie time. The ending of the movie is also pretty interesting, its not every movie that ends like this but unfortunatly some people might just expect the unexpected. This is basically a good HK police movie, we recommend this movie to anyone who likes police drama type movies.
