Story: In Macau there are 2 major crime families who have been at war for many years now, rumors are spreading that they might be signing a treaty so that they may control the city together. Shortly after a contract is put out on Mr. Lung, the leader of one of the families. Mr. K, leader of the other family, gives the task of finding the assassin to a crooked police officer, his first suspect is a newcomer to Macau. The events that follow with make the crooked cop look guilty but he will try to frame the newcomer.

Review: This is an excellent police thriller, but it is hard to say much of the story because there are many important developments down the line. This makes it a little bit tricky to understand, you are sometimes left wondering what is really going. Even if you miss some of the details it all comes together in the end. If you like a story that involves mind games you will certainly enjoy this.

The movie was mainly focused on the cop and the newcomer, all other characters were only for support. There was next to no character background but the characters were very believable. It was just too easy to hate the cop and for the newcomer (Lau Ching Wan) he was just that, totally mysterious and basically a cool character. The acting was very well done in this film for these two.

The action in the movie was cold and realistic, there wasn't that many intense gun fight scenes but you always had that constant psychological battle going on. In addition of the fight scenes you had several scenes of torture that quite brutal. Tonight's guest reviewer would like to say that in this film a women had the most extreme beatings in a two hour period he ever saw. Last fight in the movie was nice but it was a little John Woo rip off, it was a good scene but it was far from being necessary for the movie of being a success.

The subtitles were great but the only problem was they skipped to fast on some scenes. This was an excellent psychological police thriller but keep in mind the story is very intense and must be followed closely. Don't wait for a high action shoot em up film because you might find the movie a little long at times. If you like movie with a story with long development and a couple of punches, you will really enjoy this movie.

DVD [ NTSC, All Region ] :

The picture quality is excellent with a widescreen transfer, there is also surround sound 5.1. For the extras you have the start files, trailer of the movie, footage from the premier showing of the movie, a making of, featurette with some outtakes and a press conference with both stars and director Johnnie To. Unfortunately the extras do not have any subtitles. We purchased the DVD version because we heard the subtitles on the VCD version were terrible and you have an example in the trailer of the bad subtitles. If you don't understand Chinese we suggest you purchase the DVD.
