Story:
The solitary and largely self-contained Augustin, an
obscure young actor of bits-parts and advertisements,
has only one ambition, to play the lead role in a kung
fu movie. But only watching kung fu movies and a couple
of hours of Kung fu practice alone in his room are not
enough to become a kung fu star. Augustin knows that
he must pack up and start a new life where all the roots
of kung fu come from, in China. But because of a limited
budget he decides that Chinatown in south-east Paris
will probably do the same.
After subscribing to a kung fu school, Augustin
has to face another problem again, his morbid fear
of physical contacts prevent him from having proper
kung fu training. He will then be referred to Ling,
a young Chinese doctor who practices acupuncture,
and little by little, Ling's needles awaken emotions
in Augustin that his virginal body has never dreamed
of.
Review: Who among you has never dreamed of
being a kung fu star? Well the dream and passion of
the character Augustin are not really different from
those that some of us share. Augustin, Roi Du Kung
fu might not be a film filled with kung fu action
sequences, but the setting and nice story might be
enough to please a lot of you. And in my book, any
movie that starts with footage of Jackie Chan from
Drunken Master is a good movie. The film is a kind
of sequel to the French movie "Augustin",
but don't worry there's no need to have seen the first
one. This second chapter is a stand alone movie and
the story really takes the time to introduce to you
what kind of person Augustin is.
I was really surprised by the story, in a way that
the development is much unexpected. I was waiting
for that typical melodrama filled with some jokes
here and there, but that was not really the case.
It's a very interesting story with a good development
that really play with the emotions of the characters,
especially Ling and Augustin. They have quite a wonderful
destiny, but it seems that it doesn't work the way
they would like it to happen. The story is really
about the development of the relationship between
these two characters and you really begin to wonder
if their love story will really work. The ending was
also very good, very nice, not really conventional
but with a lot of sense and emotions.
Except for the fact that Augustin has some personality
problems, I could've even compared his behavior to
Mr. Bean, the UK character. He looks at life very
simply, but he is also a very kind man who tries very
hard to achieve his dream, a dream that you know is
kind of almost impossible in his situation. Augustin
was a very nice and funny character but I couldn't
really associate my self with him. I mean, I share
his passion for kung fu movies and his stupid dream
of being a kung fu star, but because of his weird
personality and behavior, I was more of a spectator
rather than really wishing to be in his shoes.
Dr. Ling, played by the great Hong Kong actress Maggie
Cheung, was a very lovable character. Ling was new
in France so she was still trying to understand the
culture and the language. The performance of Maggie
Cheung was remarkably excellent. How she struggles
to open the heart of Augustin is very touching and
we feel very sad when things are not really working
out for her.
Another important character was the old European
man that Augustin befriends in an old Chinese shop.
René, who was played by Darry Cowl, was at
first that typical old man that appears to be annoyed
by everything, but is of course a very kind man when
you finally know him. However, during the movie, that
character changes and becomes someone that you would
not give your confidence to. I don't want to spoil
anything but this character was really strange and
I was never sure of his real intention. Was he really
jealous of Dr Ling? Did he really want to help Augustin
just as a friend? Anyways, I just wanted to point
out that this character was not as good as he appeared
at first and I don't mean the acting, but the character
itself.
As I said, don't expect to see any kind of real
kung fu in this movie, except a very cool performance
by Hoang Nghi. Augustin, Roi Du Kung Fu is a lovely
comedy filled with good romance and some serious moments.
The humor was well spread out during the movie, but
most of the jokes were very light, in a sense that
none of them really made me laugh that much. It's
very pleasant humor still, but don't expect a movie
filled with crazy comedy throughout. As for the more
dramatic moments, I found them surprisingly interesting
rather than boring. May be because I really liked
the two main characters and I wished the best for
them. But at the same time, I know that this type
of movie is not for everyone and I can understand
that some people would find these moments cheesy.
However, you should expect this because it's a romantic
comedy after all.
The first reason that really pushed me to watch this
movie was that great idea about a man who is passionate
about kung fu movies and wishes to be a kung fu star.
The end result was a decent romantic comedy with a
touch of European and Asian magic. This is what makes
this movie quite enjoyable. Maybe the final result
could've been better if Augustin was more realistic
and a believable character, but it would have probably
made the movie less funny, that's for sure! If you
really like this type of film, the ones that try to
make you laugh and cry, I really think you should
give this sweet comedy a chance.

DVD
[ NTSC, Region 3
] :
This was my first experience with Intercontinental
Video, so my expectation of the quality of this release
was not very high. To my surprise, this is a very
decent release. The image quality is excellent, a
very good 16X9 Widescreen anamorphic transfer the
sound is only an Original French 2.0 DD and the English
subtitles of excellent quality, they are not burned
and can be turned off if you can understand French.
Except for a chapter selection, there's no extra at
all on the DVD. It's in my knowledge that the only
version available on DVD is this one. This DVD is
of good quality and worth a purchase, if you like
this kind of film, of course.
