Story:
Tuesday morning, the Vice President is visiting the
bank to see if everything is working fine at his fathers`
business. His real intentions, though, is to steal some
money from the safe to repay a debt. At the same time,
three bank robbers are digging a hole under the safe
to get into the bank unnoticed. But unfortunately for
them, the VP surprises one of them while he was escaping
with the money. The VP beats up the guy and takes the
bag full of money and decides to take the suspect to
the police station himself. After a few minutes, the
police show up at the bank and decide to take the VP
and the suspect to the police station for interrogation.
It turns out that these policemen are in fact also bank
robbers who just adjusted to a new plan. They decide
to keep the VP in a hideout and ask for a ransom instead.
Do all these events happen by pure chance or someone
really planning everything to commit "Jakarta?"
Which mean: "The Perfect Crime."
Review: I knew that a day will come when
I will be disappointed by a Korean movie that looked
very promising. But alas, that day did come in the
form of "Jakarta." In this case, the intention
was there, but unfortunately it didn't turn out like
it could have been. At first sight, the story was
very complex and interesting, but I just didn't dig
the cinematography. It looked as if the director tried
too much to give a very stylish look to the movie
with some camera tricks and cool editing, but I didn't
find it effective at all. The director probably had
some good intentions while doing this, but I just
found it more annoying than great.
At least I found the story inventive. There are
a lot of elements that I didn't expect at all that
caught me completely off guard. The first part of
the movie show sthe bank robbery going awry until
it concludes. The second part reveals all the key
elements in the story using long flashbacks try to
make the story clearer. The final part gets back in
the present to show the final conclusion of the movie.
The story was very well scripted but I found that
the flashbacks were introduced too brutally in the
movie. But still, the flashbacks are probably the
most important part of the movie, don't miss a frame
or you will be completely lost. As for the conclusion,
I found it a little predictable and not as surprising
as the flashbacks since the entire key elements were
already in place.
Another thing that I had problem with, except the
cinematography, were the actors. I found them annoying
and not funny at all, but as the story progress, I
started to like some of the characters while I found
other ones completely intolerable. I don't know if
it was because I didn't find any of them charismatic
at all or maybe they were just bad actors. Either
that, or there wasn't enough background development
on them. The blond guy bank robber was probably the
funniest character of them all, at least he looked
and acted funny in some of the situations. The VP
also tried to look funny, sometime it worked but most
of the time I didn't liked it. The best acting probably
come from the girl who was in love with the VP; at
least she looked serious and convincing in his small
role. Probably the most annoying character was the
third bank robber with his stupid hair; I didn't like
him at all. Maybe because he looked like he was always
over acting or maybe simply because I don't like this
type of character. In general I was not impressed
by the cast of the movie but it might be only a matter
of personal taste and some of you might not be agree
with what I think, but during the movie I didn't care
who would live and who would die and that is definitely
not a good thing.
The side of the movie that I was probably the most
disappointed with was probably the humor. Usually
I like the situational and physical humor that happen
in Korean films, but this time it didn't work out
so well. It's true that during the scene when the
girl called the police and also the gun scene between
the 2 bank robbers and the arm dealer, I was laughing
my ass off! I really liked these two scenes, but unfortunately,
that was about it. There should have been more funny
scenes like this and the movie could have been a memorable
classic, but unfortunately I found most of the jokes
predictable and not really funny. Too bad, because
the premise of the movie was good and had some great
potential for situational jokes.
All in all, "Jakarta" is not a bad movie
and is far from the average caper movie, but of course
it has a lot of flaws. But like I said, not every
Korean movie can be that good and become an instant
classic The story itself is enough to help you to
make it through the whole movie and have a pleasant
experience, but except that, the movie doesn't have
that much to offer. Those who like story who are told
in a non-chronological way like Pulp Fiction will
probably enjoy the movie but for a comedy only, there's
other Korean comedy better that this.

DVD
[ NTSC, All Region
] :
If the movie was not exceptional, the DVD was excellent.
The image quality was very good, and has an excellent
widescreen anamorphic transfer. The sound was an excellent
5.1 Dolby Digital original audio track. The subtitles
were good in general, but the timing was completely
wrong in some scenes. For the extra: Chapter selection,
Cast & Crew info, MusicVideo, trailer of the movie
and a small Making Of Featurette. The DVD is an excellent
release from Media Bank, which it was the first release
that I saw from them. But if all their release has
this treatment, Media Bank will be one of the best
Korean DVD distributors in the near future.
