Story: Just getting off of a recent break up and a demoralizing lay off from her job, Summer Koo was experiencing some major financial difficulties. However, things start to look up for Summer when she receives an e-mail from a big-budget corporation pitching a seven-figure deal to buy off a resort she "co-owns." Well, Momocha, the other owner, is a bit reluctant in selling the resort. A love-hate relationship begins and so does a fun-filled ride through this enchanting little Malaysian beach.

Review: If you're looking for some fun in the sun, then you can't go wrong with Jingle Ma's Summer Holiday. At first glance, the movie is a visual eye candy of scenic backdrops. You could compile a bunch of postcards from this entire movie and sell it for some super profit, but you'd probably have to give Jingle Ma a portion of your proceeds. Summer Holiday is the kind of movie where the plot doesn't matter and you can just let your imagination run free as a naked beach bum.

The entertainment is ever so evident in this film. It stars two of the hottest Hong Kong singers right now, Richie Ren and Sammi Cheng. Never mind the fact that Sammi coughs up romance movies like crazy; I have no objection to watching her exquisite performances. Just the mere thought of her having a new movie soon makes me a happy camper. I thoroughly enjoy her work and she never seems to disappoint her fans. In Summer Holiday, she plays a money-craving, conniving wench, but at the same time a lovable character. It's like how I can never picture Tom Hanks play a role as a villain type, not even as the mastermind. Also, Taiwanese star and the man who played Onion in my "favorite" movie, Richie Ren plays a singing beach goer ala Frankie Avalon in his '60s roles.

The entire film is an elongated Karaoke video of all the Beach Boys medleys. The stunningly alluring beach is a machine hell bent on making your eyes climax from the retina. Ma has such a beautiful taste in color and vibrancy and you'll see it right away during the opening credits. I can't explain how wonderful the feeling you'll get when you sit there and just stare at your tv screen with utter delight.

The songs will remind you of Gidget and Frankie & Annette movies. I don't see how any director could make a beach movie without any music compilations. It's like a Playboy magazine with just words and nothing else. Despite my deficiency in speaking or understanding Cantonese, my mouth and lips couldn't fight the urge to just sing along and join in on the fun. Of course, I sounded like a mental retard asking for his daily dose of M and M's, but that's besides the point. Summer Holiday simply pulls you in on the ride and let's you steer it to wherever you desire.

Summer Holiday is a film that you're just supposed to enjoy. There's no need for a thought-provoking story line here nor do you need any really strong performances, though both actors were very entertaining, because the whole point of the movie is fun, fun, fun. Let your heart get a dip in the warm salty sea and get a beach blanket while you're at it because this vacation is surely a pleasant walk on the beach. If you can't stand an intense amount of love and white sandy beaches, don't bother watching this. You'll just vomit and use up a whole bunch of unnecessary sun screen.

DVD [ NTSC, All Region ] :

This Universe version is actually very good. The DD 5.1 Cantonese and Mandarin soundtracks are very crisp and the transfer is beautiful. I wish it was anamorphic widescreen, but my Malata fixed that up right away. Yeehaw! As far as the subtitles, I have no complaints. It was very easy to follow and no big spelling errors. The DVD come with trailers, star files, and coming attractions.
