[KFCC] Guts of a Beauty Review

Story: A small yakuza group kidnap and rape a young girl named Yoshimi, before injecting her with a special drug called Angel Rain. This special drug apparently makes women sex-crazed, but the girl manages to escape the yakuza members and is later found by a female doctor. Yoshimi tells her everything about what has happened. Mysteriously, though, the yakuza members manage to find Yoshimi again, but Yoshimi decides to commit suicide to escape the yakuza. The female doctor witnesses everything and decides to avenge of the young girl. Unfortunately for the doctor, the yakuza discover her plans for revenge and ends up capturing her. The boss injects her with the Angel Rain and she dies of an overdose. Alas, she comes back to life as a bloody zombie and wreaks havoc upon the yakuza.

Review: Guts was made in 1986 and is the first part of Kazuo (Gaira) Komizu's infamous "splatter-sex" trilogy, and was also Gaira's official directorial debut. The two other installments in the trilogy are FEMALE INQUISITOR and ENTRAILS OF A VIRGIN. All the movies don't particularly have any relations to each other in terms of storyline or characters. Gut of a beauty is a very unpleasant film to watch, considering the content of the film and rape scene that are in it. At first we decide to watch this movie because we heard it was one of those old crazy sex-gore Japanese movies, but it turned out to be mostly sex and rape movie. Of course there were a couple of great cheesy gore scenes, but only a very few and mostly at the end of the movie. It is very disturbing to imagine that there are those who actually enjoy watching these types of movies.

The movie is very amateurishly and poorly executed in its cinematography, special effects and overall direction. The basic story could have been interesting if they had made the movie more entertaining in other ways instead of attempting to shock people. Also, none of the characters were interesting, except for the big boss who permanently wore sunglasses (even during the night). He got our attention because his acting was worst than any of the other actors. With a script and a storyline this immersed in shock factor, it is obvious that the acting will have a small part in the movie because it most likely the actors will be raped or killed in gruesome ways.

More guts than beauty, the movie can definitely be described in one word: exploitation. When there was gore on the screen, not only was it done on a very pathetic and raw way, but it definitely made the film more unenjoyable to watch. Rather than relying on conventional cinematic tools to deliver the movie, they attempted to use erotic imagery in order to force feed you the movie. It was not entertaining to watch at all.

There are probably other movies of this genre that are better and better choices overall than this one. Of course, if sex, rape and gore are your cup of tea, go ahead and try this one out. We have no idea who might be into these types of movies, but if you want to watch some Asian erotica, you might as well go for full on triple X porn instead of low budget, softcore zombie movies. Though, if you are looking for a splatter gore movie, you might as well forget this one also. There are plenty of better horror Asian movies out there than this one. Sex and gore doesn't necessarily mean good and awesome. If you absolutely need to watch this movie then make sure you rent it. Really, though, we're warning you. Seriously. We tried.
