Review: Produced by Milkyway crew, "Intruder" falls along the lines of Category3 Hong Kong films, movies that like to exploit violence, sex and sometimes can be very dark in humor. But, what I really found different in "Intruder" from the average CAT 3 movies was that the story was very well elaborated and also suspenseful. Usually the story in these types of films are just excuses for the gore scenes, but "Intruder" really had an interesting story. At first, you don't understand all the motivation of Yieh Siu Yan and you are really wondering if there's any real reason why she is committing all those atrocious actions. I won't spoil it for you, but I can tell you that, yes, there's a reason and there is a method to her madness. By not revealing this plan at the beginning of the movie, it became a very good idea to get the spectator hooked to his seat, wondering what all the meaning behind all these violent events were. The atmosphere was also very suspenseful, usually I found CAT 3 movies cheesy and not really serious, but the producer and director of "Intruder" really took care to avoid these cheesy and unbelievable moments and it helped to really take "Intruder" as a serious dark thriller. Ok maybe there's one or two scenes in the film that I found over-exaggerated, especially the first encounter of Yieh Siu Yan and Chen Chi Min`s young daughter, but in general, it was made believable.

What also helped to take the movie as a very serious dark thriller, was the performance of the actors. I usually found the acting level of CAT 3 films just above the one you can find in porn movies, but again the actors of "Intruder" were surprisingly all very convincing. Especially Chien-lien Wu in her role of the serial killer, most of the time we are used to see male serial killers in CAT 3 movies, but this time it was a female and she looked very strong and evil. The personality change was also very good, in public, Yieh Siu Yan was this very delicate women but alone with his victim and armed with a screwdriver she become a totally insane women that you just wish you will never meet one like that in your life. Yiu-Cheung Lai was also great in the role of the poor taxi driver. He really gave enough emotion to the character to make us feel sorry for him when he was tortured and abused in his own apartment. Even if you don't have a lot of background for each character in the movie, as the story develops, you will feel hate or compassion for these disturbed characters.

CAT 3 movies are usually pure violence and sex ridden, but not "Intruder." Of course you have some bloody scenes, violence against animals, children's and old people but I was expecting a little more shocking events during the movie. Maybe it is just me, I know that it takes a lot now to really shock me, but I didn't find "Intruder" really disturbing and daring as the usual CAT 3 movies. Most of the time a gore filled scene happened, it was sometimes too dark to really notice the details or it was not showed enough long to really see everything. I think it's more because "Intruder" tried more to be a dark thriller than one of those usual shocking CAT 3 movie. Some scenes really take a long time to build the tension between the characters before the pace switch to a more violent mood. I would say that the movie succeeds to be a good thriller, but a lot of people will probably not expect "Intruder" to be a thriller and some might be disappointed about that.

"Intruder" is not an extraordinary movie but really deserves this rating of being a Category 3 film. Maybe the movie has never been a success because it tried to be different from the average CAT 3 movies. Those of you who never saw a CAT 3 movie, "Intruder" is probably a good start, since it is not too offensive graphically, but still have enough thing to shock the average viewer. But If you are a big fan of CAT 3 movies and are expecting a lot of gory and disturbing scenes, you might be a little disappointed since I found that the movie misses out on the usual audacity that CAT 3 usually have. But if you are looking for a good suspenseful quality HK movie, you really should give a try to "Intruder" and you will be pleased with his chilling atmosphere all along the movie.

DVD [AdrenaFilm] [ PAL, Region 2]:
AdrenaFilm version features a good clear letterboxed widescreen transfer and an original sound that is in Cantonese DD 2.0. The English subtitles are of a great quality, clear with excellent timing. The versions is uncut with more gore close-ups during the gruesome murders. The extra: Trailer, photo gallery, Text interview with director Tsan Kan-Che (in Dutch text only). The menus are also in Dutch but are very easy to navigate. This is the version you need to own if you want to experience this great CatIII HK movie.

VCD [China Star]:
The China Star VCD version is unfortunately Full screen. Strangely the beginning and end credit are in widescreen, so I'm suspecting that the movie was shot wide screen. The image quality is very average and sometimes very dark. As for the subtitles, a lot of white on white during the movie but you won't miss too much text because of that anyway. This movie is now available on DVD, so get the uncut DVD version instead. At least the cheap price really helps to forget the bad quality of this VCD version.
