Story: In a girls High school in South Korea, a girl named Min-Ah discovers a diary. Unable to resist the temptation to take a deep look at it, Min-Ah decides to take the diary with her. When she begins the reading of the diary, she noticed that it was not a simple diary but a diary that two girls from his school shared. They wrote their own messages to each other through the diary. Hyo-Shin and Shi-Eun who wrote the shared-diary together was very close friends but during the time this friendship turned into love.

Reading the diary and spying on these two girls, Min-Ah noticed that something strange was going on between the two girls. The diary was full of love messages but it seemed that they acted like they didn't know each other, was it really because they were afraid of what people would say if they knew what was going on or it was something else. One day, Hyo-Shin is found dead, she apparently jumped from the top of the school to his death, but Min-Ah knew that Shi-Eun was with her at that time. After that tragic death, various rumors surrounding this event spread throughout the school and Min-Ah begins to feel a strange presence in the school, like someone was spying and tricking her. The spirit of Hyo-Shin is back from the dead, haunting the school.

Review: After reading the story you are probably saying, "What an interesting concept for making a horror movie." Lesbian schoolgirls and evil spirit, what a winning combination! Well almost, because even if Memento Mori has a very promising premise, unfortunately it doesn't deliver what it could have. The movie mixes drama and horror elements, but never really try to be neither of the two. Not enough frightening to be a horror movie and not enough dramatic pieces to be a complete drama, it's really hard to class "Memento Mori," and I would even say it hard to tell who might like the movie.

The movie is supposedly the sequel to "Whispering Corridor," which is not available with subtitles at this time and that I still not have seen, so I can't tell you what are the connections or how good or bad the sequel is compared to the first one. But I can tell you that you shouldn't miss a single scene of the movie or you will be completely lost. The two directors who directed the movie used a lot of flashback to tell the story, but I found that the approach they used was sometimes very confusing. This is really the kind of movie that you have to watch two times to really understand all the meaning of it. The story would have been less confusing if they have used a more typical approach, but maybe it would have hurt the beautiful cinematography of the movie, because "Memento Mori" is probably one of the most visually impressive Korean movies I have ever saw. In the vein of the movie such as "Nowhere to Hide" and "Secret Tears," they have used a lot of different camera lens, slow motion and special blurry techniques to give an incredible look to the movie. Fans of art movie genre should be pleased by this movie without any doubt.

But the really sad thing about "Memento Mori" is apparently there are a lot of scenes missing from the movie. Homosexuality is a taboo in Korea and something that you try not to talk about. The government, who was not happy about the movie, apparently destroyed these explicit scenes. Some of these deleted scenes are still in the trailer of the movie on the DVD, like a bathtub scenes. I don't know how different the movie would have been with these scenes included but they would have probably developed the two loving girl's characters a little more. But even without these scenes, each main character was very well developed in general and the acting was also excellent. I found that the most underdeveloped character was Hyo-Shin, I had some hard time to really understand her motivation when she was a girl and also when she was a spirit. I didn't find that character very clear, but maybe it was what the directors wanted to do. As for Shi-Eun, her girlfriend, and Min-Ah, the girl who discovers the diary, they were both excellent, the emotions and feeling are very well delivered for the audience to comprehend and relate to.

"Memento Mori" is a very hard movie to categorize, since you have a lot of drama but also some very creepy scenes in it. Both style were very effective, especially the horror atmosphere. I haven't found setting and mood to be as scary as this since the first time I saw "Ring." There's almost no blood and absolutely no gore in the movie, but the scenes were very suspenseful, scary and claustrophobic. Also, thanks to the excellent music that also helped a lot to make these scenes so intense. You probably know now that the horror elements are only psychological in the movie, so don't expect any gore or monsters. But even if the scary factor was very present, the drama part really toned it down, because it takes a while before you get any of the terror finally shows in the movie. If the filmmakers would have allowed more time to the creepy side of the story, it would have probably become an instant classis such as "Ring," but unfortunately it is not the case. The drama part was interesting but I found it a little too long and if you are expecting some kinky lesbian scenes, forget that, you only have some kisses and that is all.

Part drama, part horror, "Memento Mori" is good in both veins, but I know that taking this movie as only an horror movie will be completely missing the point, but still my favorite parts in the movie were the scary scenes and I think that the filmmakers should have allowed more time to these great and chilling elements. But only for the impressive visual style, "Memento Mori" is worth it.

DVD [ NTSC, Region 3 ] :

[The DVD is labeled as R3, but it works in Region 1 DVD player] Another great DVD from Spectrum, you have an impressive Widescreen Anamorphic transfer and an excellent 5.1 original audio track. The subtitle are also great, maybe sometimes too fast in some scenes but in general, were great. As for the Extras: Chapter selection, Cast and Crew information, Original Soundtrack and the official trailer. This DVD release is really the best way to experience the films stunning visual style.
