Story:
Fong Sai Yuk is home after he got in trouble for fighting,
his friends sneak in and tell him that there is a Kung
Fu tournament organized by a government official to
find the husband for his daughter. Fong Sai Yuk who
is skilled in Kung Fu decides to give it a try, meanwhile
the the officials daughter runs away so he replaces
her with a servant. During the fight Fong Sai Yuk sees
the servant and looses on purpose so he does not have
to marry her. Fong Sai Yuk's mother hears that he lost
so she pretends to be Fong Sai Yuk's brother to win
back his honor. She wins and is forced to marry but
she gets back home so Fong Sai Yuk gets stuck with the
marriage and that's where the trouble begins.
Review: Fong Sai Yuk is an old school Kung
Fu movie with Jet Li, a mixture of some very nice
Kung Fu and a friendly story. This movie uses a very
simple recipe yet is very enjoyable like so many other
movies of the same genre. The story is very simple
and easy to follow, also there are quite a few funny
parts in the story that will keep you smiling.
Like the other *old school* (as we like to call
them) Kung Fu movies the cast is very likeable, this
seems to be very common in these movies. The cast
is always of simple yet adorable characters, there
isn't ever a great deal of development or anything.
We guess its the small touch of humour and humbleness
that makes these characters so liked. As for the main
vilain, Vincent Zhao is just excellent. They really
show you how good his martial skills are. Also in
this movie the chemistry between the cast is very
good, they really chose the actors well.
With Jet Li in a movie is there any chance of it
being boring? Probably not. You have a fair deal of
Kung Fu in the movie separated in the various very
interesting fight scenes (like one fight scenes where
if he touches the ground he looses, so he is fighting
on top of other people). The creative ideas that are
used to make each fight unique looking is very enjoyable
to watch. Also there is a good amount of comedy in
movie with Fong Sai Yuk's marriage problems. With
such an enjoyable story and action packed Kung Fu
you, wont notice the time fly as you watch the movie.
The subtitles are very good on the DVD version and
the dialog is easy to read. Fong Sai Yuk is a simple
Kung Fu movie, this is not a big budget production
or some state of the art technology. This movie is
basically using simple stuff to make a very entertaining
movie. There are some not so good special effects
that are apparent, some people sometimes downplay
the movie because of that, but we find that the cheesy
special effects don't bother this movie one bit. You
have a great cast, a very nice story and some really
beautiful Kung Fu, what more can you ask for in an
enjoyable movie. For Kung Fu fans out there, if you
have not seen Fong Sai Yuk already you should go check
it out, and for Jet Li fans this is a good looks at
his older movies in Hong Kong.

DVD
[ NTSC, All Region
] :
The picture quality (LTB) is decent for an older movie
and you have a good surround 5.1. The DVD contains
the following extra's : Chapter Selection, Stars files,
Official Trailer, Additional Trailers (Fong Sai Yuk
II, Tai Chi Master). If you liked this movie and would
like to own it, the DVD is probably the best choice.
Be sure to get the new remastered version.
