But when he heard that the well known One-Armed Boxer killed his 2 disciple, he decide to leave his seclusion life and find that One-Armed Boxer to take revenge for his dead disciples. None the less, Blind Fung-Sheng is the master of the flying guillotine, a powerful weapon that can chop your head off in a blink of an eye.

Meanwhile, the Eagle Claw clan is organizing a martial art tournament. The tournament is so awaited that some contestants have left their homeland, such as Thailand, India and Japan, just to enter the contest. Word reaches the One-Armed Boxer who thinks that is better not to enter the tournament, to not draw attention to him, but still decides to go watch the contest.

Unfortunately for him, a lot of people recognize him and a lot of contestants are seeking a fight with this legendary fighter. Trying to deal with these arrogant fighters, One Armed Boxer is not at the end of his trouble as the master of the flying Guillotine is also coming very close to finally discover were he is hiding.

Review: Why I'm I writing a review on a movie that every kung fu movie fanatic already knows by heart...What! You call your self a martial art movies expert and you never saw Master of the Flying Guillotine! Shame one you!

Don't take this comment too seriously, I'm just kidding. Seriously, MFG is probably one of the most well know old school kung fu movie ever, well just behind the Five Deadly Venom. But what make this movie so special; here are a couple of words to clarify this for you. Wang Yu, one of the coolest weapons to hit the screen, electronic music, tournament type story, outstanding bad guys and so on.

The movie starts with a rather simple explanation about the Ching and Hans conflict during the Ching Dynasty. But for some reason that we don't really know that plot is flushed right away and is replaced by another "you killed my friends, I'm gonna kill you!" plot. The movie is in fact a sequel of The One-Armed Boxer and basically the story is pretty straight forward but what makes the movie really interesting is not really the plot but the sub genre of the movie, which is a Tournament Type movie. You know these movies when they put fighters of different background and style against each other, which are so fun to watch. MFG is an important one at that since it's has inspired so many movies, stories or even video games of today and some of these inspirations are quite oblivious.

The character design is probably one of the most interesting aspects of the movie. Wang Yu directed the movie but also played the lead role of the One-Armed Boxed. Even if the acting was good and the character was still interesting to follow, he really gets shadowed by the evil bad guy, the Master of the Flying Guillotine himself. Very color full, with a great badass attitude and of the course a really strange weapon, he really makes the movie.

But the One-Armed boxer not only has to fight against the Flying Guillotine, he also has to take out all those crazy fighters who came to the tournament to fight against him. A Thai Boxer directly from Thailand, a Hogami Itto look alike from Japan and Indian with some special physical power is a few examples of the fighters competing in the tournament.

Most of the fights are pretty good in an old school fashion. No crazy wire work here but pure traditional kung fu. But even if the fights are very conventional, there's still some really weird or innovative approach to it, especially for a movie of that time. The One Armed Boxer has a few tricks up his sleeve, an Indian mastering the yoga style can do some pretty incredible tricks and of course the flying guillotine is still a pretty incredible and deadly weapon. Just be ready to be surprised and I'm sure you will find these weirdities a nice touch.

Master Of The Flying Guillotine is a one of a kind kung fu movie that has a big place in the hearts of a lot of kung fu movie fanatic. I strongly suggest you to give it a try if you never saw this movie, because it truly deserves it's now kung fu movie cult status.

DVD [ NTSC, Region 1 ] :

If all old school kung fu classic movie had that kind of treatment, kung fu movie fans would be in heaven. This re-mastered edition is excellent, with a good LTB widescreen transfer and with the original DD2.0 mandarin audio track. For those who don't want bother reading the English subtitles, which are excellent by the way, you also have an English dub track. The extra: 12 min of additional footage added to the movie, trailers, cast and director bios, still gallery and an audio commentary by film critics Wade Major (Box Office Magazine) and Andy Klien (The New Times, Los Angles). I don't need to tell you that this DVD edition is an absolutely buy for the fan of the movie, as for those who never saw it yet, this is a great edition for the first viewing experience.
