Yuen realizes he has no real skill and that his trainers were nothing but con artists making an easy living. Driven by his passion for learning Kung Fu Yuen decides to join the traveling opera in hopes the actor will teach him true Kung Fu.

Review: The Prodigal Son won an award for best action direction accolade at the Hong Kong film awards, that says what kind of movie it is. This was one of the last true kung fu movies of the old style where the actual martial art took a higher importance over the other aspects of the movie. This is not solely a fighting movie, it is accompanied by a great story that puts all the fights into a logical chain of events. They even took the story one step further in this movie, compared to other movies of its genre the story was well developed and was simply great. It is kind of sad that these types of movies are not being made anymore as they were a true art.

The characters were typical for this genre of movie, a little side of humour in between them created a great chemistry. The characters were charismatic and likable which is common for these movies. As for the Kung Fu talent of this actors they simply excellent at their art. The development was mainly on the main character Yuen who`s life was drastically changed when he learned he had no Kung Fu talent. As for the actor who teaches Yuen it took a while to like him as he seemed very cold in the beginning.

The action was incredible in this movie, there were many many Kung Fu fights. Real Kung Fu that is, no fantasy, no magic. They made sure to make the Kung Fu used as realistic as possible (well at least to someone who did not actually study the art it looked real but even to those who know the art would say it is based on the real thing). One thing that might bother some people is the cheesy sound effects in the fights that is typical of old Kung Fu movies, some people might think that sucks but we believe it is apart of this style of movie and we would not have it any other way. Talking about sound, the sound track is a little cheesy as well but it is to bring out the humouristic side in this movie. This is an action with comedy and not a cold and serious Kung Fu movie.

The subtitles were great quality, they are usually good on DVD but sometimes the text scrolled by a little to fast. This movie is easily a Kung Fu classic, it is also representative of an older art of movie making in Hong Kong that will probably not be seen anymore. It is not necessary to have a big budget and lots of special effects to have a great movie. All you need is a good story and talented actors who take their performances seriously. We strongly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys the Kung Fu genre and especially to those who wish to see the old style of movies.

DVD [ NTSC, All Region ] :

The quality of the movie is very good considering it is an old movie, of courses there is the occasional little scratch but it is hard to notice. The sounded is surround 5.1, you really hear the difference in the scene when the house is on fire, it almost sounded like the speakers were burning. The extras : Chapters selection, Star Files, Trailers (The Prodigal Son, Eastern Condor, Millionaires Express).
