Review:
A man stands and wipes the metal
frame of the lobby seats. The lights slowly flicker
on, a domino effect of lucidity rushes throughout
the building. A guitar is heard and someone says,
“1… 2… 3…” The disco
balls spins and flutters over the large rainbow lips
that encompass the stage as a woman’s voice
is heard. Drums gently provide the beat and the singing
continues. As the myriad of images focuses and slows
down, we are introduced to THE BRILLIANT GREEN and
this is the beginning of their concert tour, SUPER
TERRA 2000.
SUPER TERRA 2000 (LIVE) brings forth, in glorious
concert splendor, THE BRILLIANT GREEN’S sugar
frenzied on stage live performances. Ranging from
the slow and mellow acoustic presentation of GOODBYE
AND GOOD LUCK to the bouncing electricity of JUMP
JUMP JUMP, the oftentimes melodic rock to bubblegum
pop punk trio of Okuda Shunsaku, Matsui Ryo, and Kawase
Tomoko is nothing short of delightful. It is their
energy and Tomoko’s beautiful and emotional
singing that has provided THE BRILLIANT GREEN’S
resonance with a commercial sensibility while having
an eclectic and original sound.
Photographed from different concerts throughout their
tour, SUPER TERRA 2000 (LIVE) is spliced together
to provide the best accounts of THE BRILLIANT GREEN
on their travels. In addition to their shows, there
are private and endearing snippets of their non rock
n’ roll lives as they play around in their hotel
rooms, wait in airports and share New Year’s
together. In the end, it is the editing that makes
the tour video so much fun as it is lively and silly
with things like showing a smoking volcano with the
text “No Smoking, Please!” written at
the bottom. For fans, it is definitely a treat as
they get a closer inside glimpse of their favorite
band.
Formed
in 1995, THE BRILLIANT GREEN has since delivered a
constant selection of smash hits and fan favorites,
ranging from the famous LOVE AGAIN theme song, THERE
WILL ALWAYS BE LOVE THERE, to the insanely popular,
HELLO ANOTHER DAY. Their harmonious, yet nostalgic
sound is what resonates through songs such as MAYBE
WE COULD GO BACK TO THEN and AI NO AI NO HOSHI, which
is the reason why TIME MAGAZINE named them as one
of the top ten bands on the non-American planet in
2001.
