Review: In rapid fire bursts, the keys of the typewriter begin spelling out their name… S… U… P… E… R… C… A… R… over and over again in a never ending loop, round and round we go as this rock opera is about to get started. Oh yes, here they are, SUPERCAR on stage, instruments in hand, strobing lights of flickering essence all around them. It’s like the ultimate rock and roll paradox, seething with harmony, filled with dissonance… giving us a little bit of psychedelic, giving us a little bit of surrealism, and thus creating the atmosphere where our guitar dreams to come true, to come alive. We’re in the audience and we’re already stargazing.

This is HIGH BOOSTER 2002, this is SUPERCAR…

And then HELLO comes into fruition, Miki’s bass strums away (you could almost see the butterflies), followed by KoDai’s drums, and then Nakako and Junji follow along harmoniously with their guitars; Nakako’s voice setting up for Miki’s angelic vocals. Their opening song ends too quickly, but it’s okay, it’s A-OK! when STORYWRITER transitions after the lull and we’re back on track, back on this riverboat ride through twinkling tunnels with songs like LUCKY and AOHARU YOUTH and STROBOLIGHTS… oh, the STROBOLIGHTS… it’s as if you could see Peco jumping in the air now, swinging his paddle against Demon, and screaming, “I can fly” and I agree whole heartedly, I do, I really do…

…but before you know it, it’s already over and I’m listening to the end of WHITE SURF STYLE 5; Nakako is already singing the chorus, and I’m singing along, too. The symphony fades and the black and white pinwheels turn as SUPERCAR walks off stage and it’s over, as if I’m waking up from a long car ride, the engines humming off because we’re home and, unfortunately, I’m already missing them, wherever they are…
