Review: With their melodic rock sound and punk infused stage performances, The Pillows, formed in 1989 and comprised of Yamanaka Sawao (vocals and guitars), Sato Shinichirou (drums), and Manabe Yoshiaki (guitar), became instant worldwide stars when FLCL was unleashed upon the international anime scene. The FLCL soundtrack was arranged with hit songs from throughout The Pillows’ career, from their smash hit, RIDE ON SHOOTING STAR, to the overwhelmingly awesome FLCL favorite, RUSH. Whether or not the Pillows were big before the cult anime series, FLCL definitely helped their musical talents stretch beyond the borders of Japan and into the stereo systems of the world.

Starting with a few scenes of setting up the concert and The Pillows practicing their songs, the LIVE AT AKASAKA BLITZE performance is an exhilarating ride when the show begins. Opening with PAPER TRIANGLE as a warm up song, this instrumental is a testament to their ability to move a crowd, tickling the strings as if the song was a tease of what was to come. The Pillows soon bust open with LITTLE BUSTERS and continues with other well known singles such as MIDNIGHT DOWN and SWANKY STREET. There are a few slower songs in the playlist, providing the ebbs and flow of their practically perfect show.

LIVE AT AKASAKA BLITZ is DVD proof of The Pillows’ frenetic ability to crush a concert stage with guitar ninja action and rock and roll shurikens. Being able to see The Pillows execute such songs as I THINK I CAN and LAST DINOSAUR can be an inspired experience (even through your television set). Their guitars are epic, having that feeling of greatness behind each strummed note. Dynamic and versatile in the sense that it makes you want to make a clenched fist and throw it repeatedly in the air in excitement. The Pillows is head banging music without the metal; combustible rock and roll at its finest.

DVD [ NTSC, Region 2 ] :

Packaged in a normal CD case, BUSTERS ON THE PLANET contains 22 tracks and one particular extra: introductions and conversations with each of the band members. While interesting and informative for the Japanese fan, unfortunately, it contains no subtitles. Like most of the concert DVD’s of this type, the BUSTERS ON THE PLANET show was shot on digital video, giving that look of being at the actual show. This DVD is highly recommended.
