Story: In the year 2020, Korea is a reunited country, but even though peace seems to reign, the Special Investigation Unit is hunting a serial killer who preys on retired scientists. It is obvious to Seok, the investigation team's leader, that the killer is taunting them by leaving signatures and obvious traces at the murder scenes.

Now that the latest victim of the killer is the chief of police, Seok has to team up with the police chief's own daughter Heesu, who works as a criminal profiler. However, during the investigation, Seok and Heesu will discover much more than they were expecting as it transpires that they might both have a connection with the killer, and that their past is not exactly as they remember.

Review: That was painful, really, it took everything I had to endure this movie, and the worst thing is that I decided to review it. I don’t really like to trash a movie but most of the things that I remember from this one are bad. I don’t have that much to say about it as the movie was too confusing and not interesting enough for me to really concentrate on the good points or even the storyline and development.

What really killed my viewing was the story. It’s so pointless, with no interesting development or events. It can put you to sleep in no time. The movie starts with an interesting premise then begins to push the development but seems to forget to explain to us what is going on. It's as if the filmmaker thought that we are able to read the character's minds. As for the investigation itself, it was not very interesting either, as most of the clues or hints were found by computer technology, or when someone finally decides to tell the truth. When we are at last granted with an explanation, you really wonder why they put so much trouble into telling you a story that could have been so simple if it was properly told.

This is really a shame as, the story could have been interesting if the development was able to put the viewers on the edge of their seat with high tension or a good mystery, instead of a complicated and pointless plot. At least the last part of the movie is more interesting but it’s already too late, as most of the viewers would probably have disconnected their SCART leads by that point.

The other terrible thing is the soulless characters. We can barely understand their motivations or thoughts, and most of them are really ordinary with no depth to their respective development. I suspect that this was caused by bad character conception rather than bad acting, because I was very impressed by Kim Yunjin's performance in 'Shiri' and 'Legend of Gingko', but she is far below her regular acting ability in 'Yesterday'.

Kim Seung-Wu play's Seok, who can be seen in 'Spark the Lighter' and 'Secret Tears', and again I was not impress by his presence on screen, even though he seemed to try his best, his character is uninteresting and unoriginal. Even the bad guy, played by Choi Minsu, is a real disappointment. Bad guys with great personality and cool design are always a winner in action movies, but not in this one. Bad guy Goliath is pretty simple and very average in his appearance. It seems that the producers wasted most of their time on a very complicated plot, and paid little attention to the characters.

At least the look of the movie is impressive, as the 3D futuristic outdoor scenes are very well done, even if they are used sparingly. Visually the movie is great, and apparently this is Jeong Yunsu's first movie, so I hope that next time he can work with a better script to support his artistic vision.

The few action scenes well done, mostly consisting of gunfights, and there are only a couple of fighting sequences. Even though the overall look of the movie is good, the fights are not as well realised, with quick edit tricks and close camera shots, you could simply not see what was going on.

I could go on and on criticising the movie, but even though the movie contains a few interesting elements, the bad plot and bleached characters leave a very sour taste in the mouth. Compared to another Korean blockbuster of the same genre, I found that '2009 Lost Memories' was better, even though I didn’t like that film either. If you are thinking of buying this movie, I suggest you to spend you money on 'Save the Green Planet' instead, or maybe invest in the stock market, you will certainly feel less cheated.

DVD [ NTSC, Region 3 ] :

The DVD is of excellent quality, great anamorphic transfer, sharp and clear and a very good DTS 5.1 audio track, the English subtitles are also of very good quality. The DVD come with a second disc containing all the bonus, all of them don’t have English subtitles of course: Production Note, Cast Interview, Making, Crew Interview, Outtakes, Supporting Actors Behind Story, Art Interview & Sketch, Deleted Scene, Costume Collection, Still Gallery, CG before & after, Theatrical Trailer, Teaser Trailer, TV Spot. Excellent DVD if you want to own the movie.
