With the help of this unexplained divinity, the Hwasan has overcome the Mae tribe, which now has to live in exile in a non-exploitable and deadly region. To end this exile the Mae tribe is working on a revenge plan. They are making a holy sword, made from the blood and bones of a thousand sacrifices, which will destroy the Mt. Holy. But to complete this destructive weapon the Mae need a last sacrifice. The child of a couple formed of a royal family of both clans. Soo, the women leader of the Mae, and Han, the chief of the Hwasan give birth to a daughter named Vee. Soo was planning to give the child to the sacrifice but Han doesn't have the intention to let his child being sacrificed and especially to destroy his native tribes. Han will save his child and give her to the Hwasan tribe where she will be protection from the Mae but Han will get dismissed for treason.

Several years later, Vee is now a woman and has been fully integrated in her new community. Growing up without any parents was difficult but at least she have good friends, Dahn and Juk, two warriors claiming for the title of boss tribe and Yun, princess of the Hwasa. They all have grown up together but now they are all adult and the friendship feeling has now become love. Dahn is fully in love with Vee, who also seems to appreciate his presence a lot. As for Princess Yun, she is planning to marry Juk who has the best chance to become the chief of the tribe. Everything would be perfect if Juk was not been interested in Vee, secretly wishing to marry her. At the same time, the Mae tribe is planning to capture Vee for their ritual. The time of sacrifice has now come and they need that last child before it's too late.

Review: I have no idea why this movie is called Gingko Bed 2: Legend Of Gingko. They should have used another name because this movie has no relation at all with the first one and is a totally different in style. The first one is a romance fantasy horror movie in modern time and this one is a kind of fantasy movie a la Conan the Barbarian, with an Asian touch for the visuals and setting of course, mixed with romance and medieval sword fights. Except for the romance factor, these movies have nothing in common so I can assure that you don't need to have seen the first one to understand completely this supposed sequel.

Apparently the movie had really poor result at the Korean box office during it's release. The general opinion was that the movie looked really cheesy, the acting was very bad and the story too confusing. Well I don't know if I saw the same movie because I really enjoyed the movie. First the look of the movie is awesome, the costume and general ambiance really worked and it looked like a serious movie. As for the general acting, well I don't understand Korean language but the actors looked convincing. And about the story, it was far more comprehensible than the first one, as for the melodrama it too was more convincing than the first one. Anyway, don't trust box office, CTHD and Legend of Zu both had really poor result at the HK box office and I liked both movies.

The story of Legend of Gingko Bed happens completely in the fantasy ancient time unlike the first one which mostly happened during our modern time and unlike the first one, the story is easier to follow. The synopsis included in this review only tells half the story, I didn't want to say too much because there's a lot of turns and twists during the development. The story really plays with the feelings of the characters and deals a lot about friendship, trust, love, betrayal, lies and death. I was expecting a lot of cheesy elements to happen but except the weird unexplained spirits and the exact reason why the Mae tribe wanted at first to destroy the Hwasan, the story is very serious, maybe suffers from short boring moments, but is generally well built. They really should have used another title and not call this movie a supposed sequel, cause it is really a stand alone story.

The design of the character was probably the most interesting thing about all these medieval fantasy characters. The costumes and the look they had was excellent and it didn't look like a cheesy Hercules TV episode. The acting it self was also good in general and the dramatic scenes were believable, which helped to give a serious look to the movie. The leading female duo was probably the best of the whole casting. Princess Yun was played by the actress Kim Yoon-jin, which also played a major role in Shiri. She really gave the best performance of the movie, as for the two males leading actors, I found them a little without personality at first but their characters really developed during the story which made them more attaching. Juk was more interesting than the character of Dahn, which I think, looked too much like a wuss to be really appreciated. The character of Cloud in Stormriders should have inspired them and it would have been the most interesting characters of the movie. I think that they should have chosen another actor for this character because he was really important and the actor didn't do justice to the character, in my own opinion of course.

If you are expecting to see an incredible swordplay movie with Legend Of Gingko you will be very disappointed to hear that the fights scenes are not a strong point of the movie unfortunately. Not because there's not a lot of fights but because the fights sequences are too chaotic to be really appreciated. Maybe the director wanted us to feel like we were in the middle of the fight, but I think that someone should tell him that there's a difference between feeling and being in the fight. The fight sequences, which consisted of medieval sparing with noticeably plastic swords, suffered from a lot of shaky camera, bad editing an unspectacular choreographies, probably because the actors didn't know how to fight. This is really too bad because great fight scenes would have made the viewing an unforgiving moment. But on the good side, at least the fights are very realistic, brutal and surprisingly very bloody too.

As for the special effects, they looked good but I think that they should have toned down on the CGI. The producer should have left the spirit part of the story more like a mystery unlike being able to actually see them. It would have removed some fantasy element of the movie but it would have made it even more serious.

I just don't understand why Korean people didn't like the movie. I mean, it's not a breath taking movie but its still very enjoyable. With a nice story of friendship and betrayal, an excellent look and decent entertainment make Legend Of Gingko Bed a fun movie to watch for those who like fantasy movie. Maybe not full blast of spectacular effects like Legend Of Zu or Stormriders, but the movie doesn't suffer from a bad, predictable or fuzzy plot unlike the other two.

DVD [ NTSC, Region 3 ] :

The image quality is great, an excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer, as for the sound you have an original Korean DD 5.1 audio track. The subtitles were in general very good but suffered from bad timing in some scenes. The menus are unfortunately mostly in Korean which make the navigation a little difficult. The extra consist of a trailer, interviews, NG scenes, OST montage and composer interview, production note, cast info, still and deleted scenes, of course all this non-subbed. By the way, don't go in the Special Feature section before watching the movie because there's a spoiler in the menu. The DVD is of excellent quality which I recommend if you want to see this movie.
