Review: Miracles do happen!

Just when I thought "Reborn from Hell: Samurai Armageddon" couldn't get any worse, they go on and make a sequel to it. With uninspired swordplay and enough plot holes to sink a ship, "Samurai Armageddon" had set a failure mark for "Reborn from Hell: Jubei's Revenge." At first I didn't know if I wanted to go through another grueling hour and a half of pure boredom. But now that I've seen it, I'm happy. The second movie in the series has completely redeemed itself.

What made the first movie so bad was the terrible special effects, laughable sword showdowns, and unnecessary and boring sex (if something can make sex boring, it's got to suck….a lot). In "Jubei's Revenge," everything's been cleaned up. Knowing that the budget didn't allow for any decent special effects, the director kept them at a minimum. There's still a plethora of decapitated heads and green blood splattering, but this time they don't make the heads talk on bamboo shoots that for some reason, the head lands perfectly on. Alas, the blood is can range from semi-realistic to "what the…..that's so much paint it's ridiculous!" That's okay though, because this time they don't throw bottom-of-the-barrel special effects at us! Go fake blood go!

The swordplay has been upgraded to "grown-ups-in-costumes-playing-Power-Rangers" to "good-old-80's-ninja-slashing-fun." This film is a haven for lovers of the 1980's samurai slash-em ups. Jubei's complete domination over the demons and their clans is a complete thrill ride. I don't know what happened! In the first one, everyone held a sword like a shy porno actress making her first film. This time around though, the swords slipped into everyone's hands like….well, I'll leave the analogy to your imagination. The best part is how Jubei is basically kicking ass throughout the whole movie. As oppose to the action-retarded pace of the first film, "Jubei's Revenge" has been dipped in a giant pot of frenzy-action, and it's delicious!

The weird perverse sex is gone! Well, aside from one completely random menage trois and two sex scenes that are essential to the plot, this movie is bizarre sex free! There's about 4 times less boobs and ass in this film. Trust me kids, that's a good thing. You'll be cheering for the absence of the bizarre sex. Yes, I know, cheering for less sex is strange, but just watch "Samurai Armageddon", you'll understand better.

I think in order to enjoy "Jubei's Revenge" to the max, you have to see "Samurai Armageddon." Once you see both of them, you will appreciate how great the 2nd installment really is. That's not to say that there's no flaws, oh no. There's a good amount of inconsistencies scattered here and there, but it really doesn't affect the movie in the long run. If you're in the mood for non-stop samurai-sword battles, see this film! Even though all the best parts and the full story of the first film are presented to you in an easy to digest six-minute prologue, I still highly recommend you see "Samurai Armageddon" before you see "Jubei's Revenge." Sometimes in order to enjoy something to it's full capacity, a little sacrifice needs to be made. Hey, no pain no gain right?

DVD [ NTSC, Region 1 ] :

Wow, Media Blasters took the cue from this movie and improved their DVD! Instead of the lame extended bottom bar for widescreen, we get the traditional widescreen format. The video quality no longer resembles a cheap VHS port. It looks as if some cleaning up was actually done. As for the extras, there's four trailers and the same history that was present in the first movie. The improvement over the quality of the second disc only makes "Jubei's Revenge" more enjoying! It's up to you though. You could shell out a couple of extra bucks and get the "Reborn from Hell: Complete Legend: and get a crappy film and a good film, or you could just get the 2nd film alone. But let me re-iterate, seeing the terrible first film will make you love the second film more. Trust me.
